Strengthening Education Against Trafficking Project (STEAP) in Ogun State

Introduction

The Strengthening Education Against Trafficking Project (STEAP) is a collaborative initiative aimed at addressing human trafficking through education and policy development. The project is funded by the Government of the Netherlands and implemented by the International Centre for Migration Policy Development (ICMPD) in partnership with the Gender Development Initiative (GenDi) in Ogun State, alongside key government agencies such as the National Agency for the Prohibition of Trafficking in Persons (NAPTIP) and the Ogun State Ministry of Education.

Project Overview

ICMPD, an international organization founded in 1993, operates across more than 90 countries with a mission to foster cooperation and partnerships along migration routes. With over 20 member states and 450 experts, ICMPD focuses on key migration issues, including policy development, governance, and counter-trafficking measures. The organization’s regional approach spans Pan-Africa, Eastern Europe, Asia, the Mediterranean, the Western Balkans, and Türkiye, ensuring tailored solutions to migration challenges. The STEAP Project in Ogun State aims to:
  • Enhance awareness and education on human trafficking, particularly among students, teachers, and parents.
  • Strengthen the capacity of educational institutions to integrate anti-trafficking education into school curricula.
  • Foster partnerships between stakeholders, including government agencies, civil society, and local communities, to combat trafficking effectively.
  • Conduct baseline assessments and research to understand trafficking trends and develop evidence-based interventions.
Through strategic collaboration, the STEAP Project seeks to empower young people and communities with the knowledge and resources needed to prevent human trafficking, ensuring a safer and more informed society.
